Fort McPherson Redevelopment Update - Atlanta, GA

Please join the RICS Southeast chapter for this interesting lunch program. Darlene Hawksley, Director of Real Estate and Business Engagement, McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority, will give a presentation on the status of the Fort McPherson redevelopment. Members, guests, friends and colleagues are encouraged to attend.

Founded in 1885, this 488 acre site in the City of Atlanta was the first permanent army installation in the Southeast. After over a century of service, the base will close in September 2011. At that time, the fort will become an economic driver for the city and region as the redevelopment process begins. The vision is to transform Fort McPherson and the surrounding neighborhoods into a nationally acclaimed, world class thriving community, where people work, live, learn and play.

About Fort McPherson redevelopment:

The redevelopment plan embodies the principals of Sustainable Urbanism by carefully mixing land uses, creating a framework for a walkable community and developing amenities to share with surrounding neighborhoods. The master plan consists of layers of development districts, land use, street network, transit, pedestrian circulation and open space. This underlying framework for the master plan will help serve both public and private investment to create a livable urban place.

The Master Plan has 3.2 million square feet of office and lab space and over 1700 residential units in a campus-style environment. The plan also calls for a “Research Boulevard” and development of the Historic District around the parade ground for residential, commercial and public uses to include restaurants, office space, galleries and boutique lodging under a cultural theme. The exclusive “Staff Row” homes would be preserved and used for single family residential or other complementary uses. The centerpiece of the development will be a Linear Park that wraps around the entire property from MARTA station to MARTA station. This green space will be dominated by old-growth trees, paths, bike trails and a 30-acre Event Space, a new home for special events and festivals.
