Andres Duany was selected for honorary membership in recognition of the vital contribution he has made to the built environment, not only in Scotland but across the world. Duany’s appointment dovetails well with the Institution’s Vision for Cities program which outlines the environmental, economic and social context in which city governments and property professionals across the globe are planning and delivering long-term infrastructure. The RICS is a global organization with global views and it firmly believes that a long-term city vision and spatial planning, which is not rewritten according to political change, is the way to deliver infrastructure and achieve sustainable growth.

Duany’s record speaks for itself. A graduate of both Yale and Princeton and the co-founder of the influential Congress for the New Urbanism in 1993, Duany’s international reputation and influence in the sphere of new urbanism are unparalleled. He co-founded DPZ with his wife Elizabeth in 1977 and in the last seven years, DPZ has been continually developing a new model zoning code called the SmartCode. The firm’s method of integrating master plans with project-specific design codes and regulations is currently being applied to sites across the United States. DPZ projects are also underway in Scotland, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Mexico, Spain, England, Russia, Turkey, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
RICS Scotland Director, Graeme Hartley, said: “It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of this outstanding contributor to the built environment.

“RICS membership is a world leading qualification when it comes to professional standards and to be invited to join the organization as an honorary member is recognition of an individual's contribution and commitment to the property industry.

“Andres Duany is a world recognized figure in the areas of planning and development, and although he is not a surveyor, his connection to the profession and the influence he has through the position he holds is incalculable. The passion and commitment that Andres brings to work that he does is nothing short of inspiring and we are delighted to have him as a member.”

Duany, in response, replied: “This is indeed an honor. The profession of Chartered Surveyor does not exist in the U.S., and it has been a pleasant revelation that such exists in Britain. I must say that I feel a greater kinship with the rationality and business acumen of the Surveyors than with the general run of my colleagues in architecture, who seem on the whole to have lost their good sense.”

Mr. Duany was presented with his membership at a private dinner in Edinburgh on Monday evening.
