COO Sean Tompkins Confirmed By RICS Governing Council

LONDON -- April 13, 2010 -- RICS chief operating officer Sean Tompkins has been named chief executive officer of the organization and will assume his new role later this year following the retirement of Louis Armstrong. The decision was made by RICS Governing Council today at its meeting in London.

“RICS is at an important point in its development and Sean Tompkins has the knowledge, ambition, energy and leadership skills to build on its growing reputation as the mark of property professionalism worldwide, “ said Max Crofts, RICS president.

In 2002, Tompkins joined RICS as its first executive director responsible for developing RICS’ brand and marketing and as a result of his success in this role was named as chief operating officer (COO) in 2006. Since becoming COO he has led a program of substantial change across RICS’ operations, which has resulted in it becoming a financially stable organization with more than £50m in annual revenues. Most recently, he has successfully steered RICS through the economic downturn by implementing a program of efficiency measures while maintaining the ability to achieve strategic and financial goals.

During his tenure, Tompkins has put great focus on developing the RICS brand from a traditional, trusted UK mark of property professionalism to one of international significance. He has achieved this through a combination of his strong marketing acumen and a systematic, market-driven approach to business planning.

Prior to joining RICS Tompkins was director at the Prudential Group covering Prudential Life and Pensions (£10bn Funds Under Management) and Prudential Unit Trusts Ltd (£1bn Funds Under Management). He headed up the company’s retail and corporate marketing strategy, including its digital propositions. Tompkins was also a leading media spokesman as well as having responsibility for shareholder briefings and part of the Prudential team which led a number of mergers and acquisitions.

The RICS global vision and strategy is set by the 70-strong Governing Council, chaired by the President and includes RICS members from all world regions.
