CARDIFF, Wales, United Kingdom – June 3, 2009 –
Though it may be a challenge in the property market at the moment, Cathy McLean, director of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Wales, will be tackling an uphill battle with a difference this June.

Cathy and husband Tony are taking on the Canadian Rocky Mountains for their biggest cycling challenge to date to raise money for cancer care.

They will be cycling 400km on a tandem bike at altitudes of up to 2,055 meters (6,742 feet) to raise more than £5,500 ($9,090) for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The two grandparents will start in Calgary and cycle through Banff National Park and high into the Rocky Mountains, taking in the famous Lake Louise and Columbia Icefield, before arriving in Jasper five days after starting the mammoth tandem bike ride.

It is the third overseas ride that the couple have made. They have also taken on challenges in Egypt and Poland and many more in the UK. Tony has previously taken part in solo challenges in China and India.

Cathy said: “I suffered from breast cancer five years ago, as did my sister. Unfortunately I also lost my mum and my aunt to cancer and Tony lost his dad. We also recently lost two young chartered surveyors in Wales to cancer so it’s affected me in my professional as well as personal life. Understandably it’s something that is very close to our hearts and as one-in-three people will suffer from cancer at some stage in their life, it’s something that should be close to all of our hearts.

“We know we are in the middle of a recession but cancer charities still need to be supported so they can continue to help people affected and their families. We feel our cycle is our way of paying them back for all the help they have given our family and community.”

The couple are already in training for the cycle, which starts on Sunday, June 21. To support Cathy and Tony and Marie Curie Cancer Care, visit: www.justgiving.com/tandemrockies.
