RICS President Robert Peto FRICS led a panel of experts at the RICS and DePaul University Global Property Trends event in Chicago on Thursday, May 5. The event was attended by members of the RICS Midwest chapter, members of partner associations such as CCIM and ASA, students from DePaul University and other property industry professionals.

The panel, moderated by RICS Americas Chairman Tom Justin CRE FRICS and featuring leading experts representing Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America, comprised James Whittington FRICS and Founder of Nove International, Dr. James Shilling FRICS from DePaul University and Guy Ponticiello from Jones Lang LaSalle’s Capital Markets Group.

The event kicked off with overview presentations that represented each global market. Mr. Peto spoke about the hottest markets in Europe and said that the RICS Global Property Survey play a key role in capturing turning points in markets. Mr. Whittington looked at three markets in the Latin American region that, while aren’t obvious darlings of the global community, yield greater potential in Chile, Peru and Colombia. Dr. Shilling discussed the similarities between the growing housing bubble in China and what may have transpired in the United States several years ago. Mr. Ponticiello said that not all capital is flowing to BRIC countries and that there is growing optimism in the US commercial real estate sector that is still the top destination of global investment flows.

Mr. Peto attended this event as part of his visit to the Americas region, which coincided with RICS’ official Latin American launch.
