Turner & Townsend, the Global provider of professional services to the construction industry has today announced the merger of its Canadian operations with cm2r, a Toronto based construction consulting firm which operates throughout Canada, as well as North America, providing cost management, project management, loan monitoring and consulting services.
The merger follows the rapid expansion of Turner & Townsend in Canada, where it has had a presence since 2004, providing project management services to motor manufacturer Nissan, and cost management services to a wide range of clients, particularly in the mining sector, including Barrick Gold and Pebble Limited Partnership. More recently the company has advised clients such as EllisDon, Fengate Capital Management and other international lenders on P3 projects. cm2r is currently engaged in a number of significant key frameworks and public private partnerships including the development of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.
The merged company will be called Turner & Townsend cm2r and have offices in Toronto and Calgary with plans to expand into other locations in due course. As a combined force the Directors believe the company will be well placed to grow significantly with the added level of experience in management consultancy, facilities management, PPP/P3 and related cost and project management services.
Commenting today, Vince Clancy, Chief Executive Officer of Turner & Townsend said: "We have, for some time, recognised Canada as one of the most exciting growth markets in the world and, together with cm2r, who share our business culture and ambition, we are now very well positioned to build a significant business using our combined skills, knowledge and experience."
Gerard McCabe MRICS, Managing Director of cm2r added, “The merger gives us an immediate critical mass with access to an enormous level of international experience and the opportunity to secure an increasing number of larger projects, particularly in the infrastructure and natural resources sectors in Canada, while at the same time creating a bigger business which is better able to grow internationally.”

Since joining the firm, Joanne has taken a senior leadership role in providing technical due diligence services to global capital lenders participating in the Canadian P3 market, for which BTY Group has been providing advisory services for 15 years.
Integrating her expertise across the multiple elements of a P3 transaction, she advises public and private sector clients on contractual, finance, design and planning, project management, facilities management, capital and life cycle and operational issues.

The Vancouver headquartered company first established its presence in Ontario more than a decade ago with an office in St. Catharines, about one hour south of Toronto. “I’m very excited about the growth potential for BTY Group in Ontario,” she said. “The firm is at the front of the game for providing advisory services on major projects and is particularly strong in the rapidly growing P3 market. Over the past 30 years, BTY Group has developed the expertise and in-house data to provide the robust and timely intelligence this market increasingly demands. It’s very satisfying to be a leader on such an accomplished and ambitious team.”
Prior to taking the position in Toronto, Joanne worked in BTY Group’s office in Vancouver, where the company provided advisory services on multiple venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
“That success was very inspiring,” she says. “We’re always looking to be at the forefront of proving the best professional services in the industry and continue to strive at being market leaders.”
RICS membership has been and will be an important element in continued success for Joanne and BTY Group.
“The RICS standard communicates creditability -- and it is internationally recognized.” she said. “BTY Group encourages a RICS membership program for students and graduate employees working towards their full RICS accreditation. BTY Group has always been very supportive of RICS and our clients are increasingly aware of the value of the credential.”

Gary Evans MRICS Announces Launch of GPE Facility Consulting LLC
New Building Surveying and Facility Management Consulting Firm Based In Washington DC Area
March 19, 2010 -- Gary Evans, the RICS Americas representative for global Building Surveying and Facility Management professional groups, has launched one of the first RICS-affiliated Building Surveying and Facility Management Consulting companies in the United States.
Launched on March 1, 2010, GPE Facility Consulting LLC quickly landed its first major contract supporting a facility management automation study for the International Monetary Fund. Based in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, GPE Facility Consulting LLC is well situated to provide capital planning and maintenance optimization services to major U.S. national organizations and the U.S. Federal Government.
According to Evans “the need for these services is only going to rise as organizations try to more efficiently manage and maintain aging buildings with fewer resources.”
Before founding GPE Facility Consulting LLC, Evans provided facility management consulting services for numerous U.S. government agencies, including GSA Office of Governmentwide Policy, Department of State, Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Health and Human Services and the Architect of the Capitol. He also reviewed entire U.S. Federal Real Property Profile (FRPP) database of more than 1.2 million facility assets (buildings, structures and land), analyzed and interpreted results and recently presented findings to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
In the past few years, he also created, developed and tested an innovative, ground-breaking condition assessment modeling technique that allows organizations to easily record and track real-time facility conditions.
Evans moved to the United States in May 2000 following an introduction to a U.S.-based engineering firm at the Building Surveying Christmas party in Bristol, United Kingdom, demonstrating that getting involved in local RICS chapter events opens doors and creates opportunities.

Alexia Nalewaik MRICS CCE announces the launch of QS Requin Corporation
New quantity surveying firm and management consultancy based in Southern California and Washington DC area
October 7, 2009 -- Alexia Nalewaik MRICS has announced the full launch of QS Requin Corporation. She brings more than 17 years experience in construction cost management to her new company and this leadership role. Industries served include manufacturing (food & beverage, automotive, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, semiconductor), healthcare, higher education, hospitality, and laboratories.
She was most recently associated with the construction audit practice at Moss Adams LLP; the risk analysis group at Faithful+Gould; and Deloitte’s real estate and cost segregation divisions. Her specialty is in cost management, risk analysis, audit, claims, owner’s agent, and complex capital program delivery. Now she has established QS Requin Corporation to provide cost avoidance and mitigation services to clients across the country and internationally.
“I’ve been looking to build up this type of practice for a long time,” Alexia said. “The visibility I’ve gained by being active in membership associations like RICS has helped me raise my profile. Through serving the associations I saw the benefit of reaching beyond my firms and clients for networking. I couldn’t have done this five years ago, before I became active as a member,” she said.
Alexia’s team includes industry leaders who are members of professional and technical associations. She characterizes them as problem-solvers skilled in current and emerging best practices, and proven methods in project controls and capital program management. They specialize in estimating, scheduling, accounting, legal, architecture, LEED and more.
“My teams are built from a loose network I’ve developed over the years,” she explained. “Some of these people I worked with in the past, sometimes as their employee, sometimes as a supervisor. I have come across great people through the professional associations – and others were picked up in unlikely places.” Alexia is a long-distance swimmer, and the swim team she trains with at CalTech happens to have some great minds
So why now and why this kind of practice?
“I saw the need for a greater breadth of service for clients,” she explained. “If I see something that needs fixing, I can’t stop until it is set right. I really enjoy auditing, but on engagements I found so many things I wanted to improve but couldn’t do without compromising my independence as an auditor. Now I can provide a diversity of services and maintain some third party independence.”
The clients coming to her now are owners who have a specific concern they want to manage or understand, have a sense that their construction program performance could be better, or require specific short-term expertise. “There are new pressures in this economy. And, on big construction projects, inefficiencies and controls gaps are magnified – often in an embarrassingly public fashion. These owners have a feeling that something isn’t quite right, and they are looking for advice and guidance,” she noted.
“We are the trusted advisors who jump in, address the situation, and depart. In the end, it all comes down to establishing a strong contract, implementing appropriate controls to keep things on track and on budget, and then of course claims and change management. It may sound straightforward, but these are the keys that make the difference in capital program success.”
QS Requin Corporation offers:
- Contract negotiation and compliance
- Independent project monitoring
- Report validation, expenditure reconciliation
- Incurred cost and change order analysis
- Estimate validation
- Litigation support / claims consulting
- Project risk management plans

Terry Delahunty MRICS joins firm as its first LEED-accredited attorney
May 14 2009
Foley & Lardner legal eagle leaves for GrayRobinson
Well-known real estate lawyer Terence “Terry” Delahunty Jr. MRICS is leaving Foley & Lardner LLP after 24 years with the firm to join Orlando-based GrayRobinson PA.
The former Foley & Lardner partner will become the first U.S. Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-accredited attorney at GrayRobinson, said firm executives.
Delahunty, 54, said the reason for his departure was due to Foley & Lardner taking on more national-level litigation, rather than dealing with local issues, which are more his passion. He declined to go into the financial terms of the move, but said it was competitive with what he earned at Foley & Lardner.
Since his first job as an attorney for Van den Berg, Gay & Burke, an Orlando-based law firm Foley & Lardner bought in 1985, Delahunty has been active in the real estate world.
